Natural Look at Social Networking

Do you marvel at the new internet-enabled social networks we all now have, or at least all now can have? And do you feel that your network, electronic or otherwise, reflects conscious decisions and preferences on your part? A new study of modern-day hunter-gatherers by Harvard University and The University of California encourages a broader view on both points. It suggests: 1) that modern-day online social networks are more closely linked to earlier natural human social dynamics than we may realize, and 2) that our personal social networking preferences may be much more predictable than we believe.

The new study examines how human social networks are structured in our natural hunter-gatherer setting, focusing on how people with varying propensities for cooperation and individualism naturally mix and adjust to one another. This structuring of high and low cooperators is important, since in a predominantly cooperative species like Homo sapiens, incentives naturally exist for people who are more self-interested to take advantage of our generally cooperative social setting.

But highly individualistic “free-riders” must be naturally limited and made exceptional, since excessive or normalized individualism risks threatening essential cooperation and the entire society. This problem has been with us since the beginning of social life itself, and remains one of the most important social policy issues today.

Quickly Rate Meals via OurPlate

Learn about HumanaNatura’s OurPlate Healthy Eating Campaign.

HumanaNatura’s OurPlate healthy eating campaign offers more than just general guidance on the best way to eat naturally and optimally. You can use the OurPlate approach anytime to quickly rate the meal options that you and others have. Rating meals with OurPlate is easy and powerful. With just a bit of practice, an OurPlate rating can be created for any meal in a few seconds, helping to improve the quality of your nutritional choices and advice.

Rating meals with OurPlate

Click for a full-size copy of the OurPlate Meal Rating Guide.

To rate any meal using HumanaNatura’s OurPlate model, just follow these five simple steps:

  1. Major points for raw veggies – give a meal six points if it is at least half raw vegetables (or veggies that could be eaten raw). If the amount of raw veggies is less than half of the meal, adjust the points downward proportionately. In any case, the maximum score for raw veggies is six points, reflecting the gradually diminishing benefits of adding food, no matter how healthy.
  2. Points for raw fruit – give the meal two points if it includes at least one serving of fruit. Again, two points is the maximum score for added fruit.
  3. Points for natural protein – give the meal two points if one serving of a natural protein is included. Yes, two points maximum score here too.
  4. Take-down for other foods – subtract two points for each serving of other foods that are included in the meal, but this time with no limit on the number of points that can be taken away.
  5. Special take-down for sweets - subtract four points for each serving of sweets that are included, again with no limit on the number of points that can be taken away.

As you can see, the maximum possible meal score with OurPlate is 10. In practice, this score is reserved for vegetable-rich and health-optimal salad meals made using HumanaNatura’s Natural Eating guidelines.

Match-Up: OurPlate vs. MyPlate

Click to learn about OurPlate, HumanaNatura’s new healthy eating campaign!

OK, so HumanaNatura created and strongly favors OurPlate, and maybe this is not the best example of the U.S. government’s new MyPlate guidelines in action. But it is an actual photo of the recently unveiled approach being demonstrated by government officials. Wow! Anyone want a bite of this sort of scary and decidedly spartan MyPlate, instead of the HumanaNatura OurPlate example we have put up alongside it? And does anyone really think that this MyPlate prototype is nutritionally superior to our delicious and healthy-just-to-look-at HumanaNatura salad meal?

Click to learn how to quickly score meals using the OurPlate Meal Rating Guide.

If you are thinking rematch, we would point out that even a world-class master chef using the government MyPlate guidelines is going to begin from a severe nutritional disadvantage relative to HumanaNatura’s OurPlate approach. Specifically, they will be forced to include unnatural and health-limiting foods like sugar and lectin-rich grains and cereals, carbo-bombs of cooked starches, hyper-allergenic beans and legumes, and a good helping of dairy products (which is fine if you are a newborn calf).

OurPlate – Better than MyPlate!

Click to learn how to quickly score meals using the OurPlate Meal Rating Guide.

The U.S. government recently took away its old food pyramid, after using this symbol and its component food groups for decades to summarize (and misrepresent) how Americans ideally should eat. In its place is a new nutritional icon and set of recommendations called MyPlate.

Unfortunately, the new look and health guidance of MyPlate are only a partial improvement on the disastrous approach of the old pyramid and food group thinking that came before it. This outgoing model for optimal eating failed in at least three important ways: 1) it was inconsistent with our best science and growing research into human eating in nature and under artificial influences, 2) it was from the start heavily pressured and corrupted by agribusiness and other interests, and 3) as a policy tool it remained at best ineffectual at countering alarming dietary trends over at least two generations.

Although the new MyPlate recommendations are a step forward in two areas - notably no longer promoting the consumption of sweets and excesses of fats – this new model for nutritional health is largely a repackaging of older and now outdated nutritional ideas and carries forward several important shortcomings and errors from the retiring pyramid and earlier food group model.

Introducing OurPlate…A Better Approach

To correct crucial flaws in the U.S. government’s new MyPlate approach, HumanaNatura is today introducing its alternative, 100% natural, and science-intensive OurPlate healthy eating campaign, targeting health-seeking people and communities around the world. The campaign’s orange icon above graphically summarizes essential  dietary practices from HumanaNatura’s Natural Eating technique, the first of four science-based health techniques that comprise comprehensive natural health system.

An Integrated Outlook on Fitness

Are you one of those people who has it all…intelligence, physical fitness, natural good looks, lasting happiness, a personality that invites others, and maybe musical or another creative talent? If you answered, “not quite,” would you like to be this way?

The truth is not just that we can have or be all these things, but that we naturally are all these things. In an area of findings that can lead to new insights into our life and health potential, these various attributes have been shown in research to be natural aspects or qualities of a complete, integrated, and healthy human being. They have also been shown to increase or diminish together…as our natural health improves or as it is reduced.

As natural beings and highly-evolved social animals, possessing these essential features of successful human life is our expected condition and not an exceptional state – whenever we are naturally and fully expressed as people, balanced, vital, and well. When we are in the “not quite” category, or worse, this is a sign that our overall health and natural vitality have been compromised, underdeveloped, or misunderstood.
